Many older tiles, particularly 9-inch vinyl floor tiles, contain chrysotile (white asbestos), and pose a serious risk if broken, sanded, or lifted without proper controls.
The Hidden Danger Beneath: Bitumen Adhesive
Even if the floor tiles themselves don’t contain asbestos, the black bitumen adhesive used to fix them often does. This glue-like substance can bond tightly to concrete or wood subfloors, making removal tricky — and potentially hazardous without the right precautions.
